About the course

For ‘plantaholics’ everywhere.

Each session includes a detailed look at 10 plants, themed by season and used within the garden, followed by demonstrations and discussions of key garden practices.

Relax and have fun, learning in the company of fellow gardeners. No exams, no pressure, no requirement for any prior course attendance.

Suitable for anyone with a love of gardening who would like to increase their plant knowledge and learn how to get the best from the plants in their garden.

What you will learn

Topics to include:

  • Weekly plant identification of up to 10 plants, with lots of information on where they grow best, the top cultivars to choose, with really useful growing and maintenance tips.
  • Understanding your garden soil.
  • Seed sowing, pruning and pest & disease problems.

This course will feature tours of the garden centre to view and discuss the best products on offer for growing and displaying plants, and how to keep your plants healthy, reducing the use of chemicals.

Your tutor will also demonstrate planting and maintenance techniques.

Botanical names of plants will be used alongside the common names.

About the tutor

Tessa Allen has taught horticulture for over 35 years and the RHS Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture for the last 23 years. Throughout, Tessa has had a high achievement and retention rate, which she puts down to the friendly but organised classroom atmosphere.
